How to Prepare Older Siblings for a Newborn Photoshoot
Welcoming a new baby into the family is an exciting moment, but it can also be a big adjustment for older siblings—especially toddlers. A newborn photoshoot might feel overwhelming for them, but with the right approach, it can be a wonderful experience for everyone.
Just like I focus on keeping your baby calm and asleep during a session (read more about how I do it here), I also take a thoughtful approach to making older siblings feel comfortable, included, and engaged during the shoot.
I’ve worked with many families, and I know that every child reacts differently—some are eager to snuggle their new sibling, while others need a little extra time to warm up. My goal is to create a stress-free and enjoyable session for the whole family. Here’s how we can make it easier!
1. Keep It Low-Key & Fun
Instead of telling your child, “We’re going to take pictures,” try something more playful, like:
“We’re going to visit a friend, and we’ll take some pictures while we’re there.”
This takes the pressure off and makes it feel more like an adventure rather than something they need to perform for.
2. Let Them “Help” Instead of Pose
Young children love feeling involved, so rather than asking them to sit still and pose, I encourage them to help in ways that feel natural, like:
✔ Holding the baby for a few moments (with support).
✔ Gently touching the baby’s tiny fingers or toes.
✔ Pointing to the baby’s nose, hands, or belly.
✔ “Helping” to tuck in the baby’s blanket.
Giving them a sense of purpose makes them feel like an important part of the session instead of just being asked to “smile for the camera.”
3. Don’t Worry if They’re Not Excited Right Away
Some toddlers will happily cuddle their new sibling, while others might be more hesitant. That’s completely okay! There’s no rush.
If your child isn’t ready to take photos right away, we’ll simply start with individual baby portraits or family shots without direct interaction. Often, once they see everyone else participating, they’ll naturally want to join in.
4. Stay Positive & Relaxed
Children pick up on our emotions, so if you’re stressed or anxious about getting the “perfect” shot, they’ll sense it. Instead, stay relaxed and let things unfold naturally.
My approach is flexible—if one method doesn’t work, I’ll try another. I have plenty of experience working with toddlers, and I always find a way to capture genuine moments, even if it’s not exactly how you pictured it.
5. Let Go of Expectations & Enjoy the Moment
The best sibling photos are not the perfectly posed ones—they’re the ones that show real connections. Whether it’s a quick hug, a curious glance, or even a silly moment, those are the images that will make you smile for years to come.
So instead of focusing on getting everything “just right,” simply enjoy this special season in your family’s life. I’ll take care of capturing the magic!
Final Thoughts: Making the Experience Joyful for Everyone
Adding a new baby to the family is a beautiful, emotional experience for everyone—including older siblings. My goal is to create a session where your toddler feels included, your baby feels safe, and you can relax and enjoy the moment.
